Wonder Weeks are for the Babies

I have been at this dad thing for an entire 19 weeks and the thing that sticks with me the most is that your baby changes… constantly.

They are experiencing everything for the first time and developing new skills each days.  It’s awesome and wonderful to see how my little man gets bigger and starts realizing stuff like he has hands… feet… and even crazier… he can control them!  A lot of these new developments come in what has been humorously coined “wonder weeks” by researchers in the Netherlands.  After experiencing a couple of these weeks I am not too fond of the misleading notion of this term.  It makes it sound like a glorious time for everyone involved.  Alas, it may be a wonderful time for your child but the periods of fussiness before and during these weeks will not always have you using those words to describe these times in your life.  Maybe… Exhausted Weeks or Emotional Surprise Weeks or my favorite You Will Have No Idea What Your Baby Wants Week.

So, why am I making such a big deal about this for dads? Well because these new wonders and realizations for your child cause things to change in their brain and how they react to the world which means that technique you use to get your child to sleep… well, it will just piss them off.  Holding him and swaying… oh he hates it now.  Humming and the rocking chair… yup… hates it too.  I have had to figure out on the fly what is going on with Mathias and try to find new ways to help him figure out the world.  It hasn’t always been pretty either and it won’t be for you.  This is the challenge out there for you dads during this lovely time in your child’s life.  Learn to adapt! Try to read all those articles and books your wife will ask you to look at.  Know what is coming… this article breaks down the changes and when they usually occur.  Don’t think for a moment you have it all figured out because your kids like to flip the script on you in a heartbeat.  So, remember wonder weeks are for the babies…

Teague FC Announces Roster Addition

TEAGUE FC ANNOUNCES ROSTER ADDITION
“Tiny Teague” set to join family in early July 2013.

Garrett and Lauren, founders of Teague FC, are adding to their “family club” in the summer of 2013. The proud parents-to-be announced the news to family and friends in person over the recent holidays, while visiting both Oregon and Texas. The baby is expected to compete for its parents and grandparents’ top affections upon its arrival in early July. A routine exam earlier today confirmed “tiny Teague” is healthy with a strong heartbeat at 14 weeks.

“The secret is finally out!” exclaimed Garrett, who enjoyed many ways of trying to point out Lauren’s baby bulge to unsuspecting family at Christmas. The dad-to-be will be juggling fatherhood with his last semester of college and a full-time position at JaxParks in the fall.

When asked about gender preferences, Lauren simply answers, “Ten fingers and ten toes is all I want,” though acknowledging the Teague family pressure to have a baby boy who will carry on the family name. The parents are finding out the sex of the baby in February, and Garrett is tasked with a creative way to announce it via video on this website. A name, however, will likely be undecided until the parents meet the little one for the first time.

Tiny Teague is the first roster addition since Teague FC was established in September 2010. Along with its parents, the baby is eagerly awaited by grandparents Roy & Mary Beyer of Prineville, Oregon, and Rick & Robbye Teague of Fort Worth, Texas, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins (biological and honorary) across the country.

TeagueFC.com will be the exclusive home for all baby news, including bump and ultrasound photos, video updates and things Lauren & Garrett want to share with the world. Respecting your Facebook news feed, the parents will avoid posting ultrasound photos onto Facebook, but you can subscribe to TeagueFC.com to receive updates in your email inbox (top right on the homepage).

Our Christmas cards should be dropping in a mailbox near you this week, unless the postman was extra speedy this year, and some of you have already seen the 2012 edition. In that case, thanks for checking out the new web address (and look) of our family blog, TeagueFC. We hope you’ll visit often and subscribe to get new posts from me & Garrett. Enter your email address in the box in the top right corner of the homepage, and new posts will be emailed directly to you,

One item I couldn’t fit on this year’s card was the recap of our highlights from the year, but by putting them here, I can also share more photos and links to posts from our favorite moments.

2012 with the Teagues…

Star Watching on NYE

January: Rang in 2012 at the Dallas Stars NYE game with the Teague family. Back in Florida, we played tour guide for Adam & Kirstyn (brother & almost sis-in-law) in Jax and Orlando.

February: Lauren goes 13.1 miles in 28 degree temps with Elysia (Jax BFF) at the “26.2 with Donna,” while Garrett watches from warm places. Lauren also gets in two cross-country trips with visits to Molalla and the Northern Trust Open in L.A (and back to Molalla!), with annual Valentine’s Day pizza making in between.

March: Danced the night away at Brian & Janelle Zipse’s wedding. Crossed Alabama off the travel list by roadtripping across the Florida panhandle to spend a Spring Break weekend with the Teague family in Gulf Shores. Moved just in time to host our annual Corndog Day party in the new house, with roomie Eric.

Beyer Family at Easter

April: Surprised Mary (Lauren’s mom) on her birthday in Oregon, then enjoyed Easter with the Beyer and Ferrarin families. Garrett leaves the JU Soccer team to focus on rehabbing from sports hernia surgery, then earns his first 4.0 in  college (or…ever?).

May: Garrett starts video production internship at City of Jacksonville Parks & Rec department, but we still make time to cheer for our faves at THE PLAYERS at TPC Sawgrass and the US Mens National Soccer Team vs. Scotland (both in Jax).

June: Spent many weekends on friends Leif & Anne’s boat exploring the St. Johns River and Intracoastal. Lauren finishes the month in Washington D.C. for the AT&T National, and squeezes in an early morning tour at the Pentagon before flying home.

July: Mary, Roy and Garrett takes a turn surprising Lauren in Fort Worth during our annual summer vacation week with the Teague family. With our parents, we visited Possum Kingdom Lake, explored the Stockyards and Fort Worth. Then Garrett & Lauren cheered in the Timbers Army at FC Dallas to celebrate Garrett’s birthday.

August: Lauren hits the road for the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs, visiting Bethpage (NY), TPC Boston, Liberty National (NY) & East Lake GC (Atlanta) across five weeks. Garrett is asked to stay on with Parks & Rec as a real (paid!) employee, and starts producing JaxParks TV.

Our "Jax Family" celebrating in Hartford.
Our “Jax Family” celebrating in Hartford.

September: Celebrated the “Szeklefsen” wedding in Hartford, CT with our Jax friends, then explored Boston & Cambridge on Labor Day weekend. Also got a long weekend in Atlanta to visit our friends Russ, Alice, Brian, Marilyn & Elayna.

October: Lauren gets a taste of fall with a week in Oregon that includes crabbing at the coast, quality family & friend time, and helping with chores at the parents’ ranch!

November: Getaway on Thanksgiving weekend with Rick, Robbye, Cameron & Amy at Amelia Island, and witnessed the Jacksonville Jaguars’ first home win (and likely only) of 2012! Much to be thankful for as we approach the end of the year.

December: Christmas time is here again, and with it comes parties, family dinners, movie marathons and a week at each “home,” in Oregon & Fort Worth. We hope to see you on our travels!

Pictures Are Worth 1,000 Words (or so I hope)

Want to try a new project that I can share here on the blog and hopefully be more consistent in my postings. My friend E used to take a picture at 5:25 pm every day (or close to it) to share with her world during 2009. This year she’s been collaborating with a friend on a different daily-photo blog (of which I love to follow along!).

I want to try the photo every day approach, as a way to track what I’m doing and where. My hope is that in addition to sharing visual memories, I’ll also be more inclined to share a story or antcedote most days too. I’ll also be posting these to my Flickr account (link on the right) too those who prefer the gallery style.

To get started, here are a few different photos from the past days, weeks & months that can show what I’ve been up to!

Meet Zoe

Single Greatest Night honorees got together for lunch this week (thanks Carabbas!) and we were joined by a couple of the team ambassadors, Zoe and Cammie. I should back up and tell you about how our teams are structured, and why. Each of us 40+ honorees are all divided between 4 different teams to provide help each other fundraise and provide a competitive incentive as we go through November. Each team is named after an child ambassador from Jacksonville with CF. I am a proud member of Team Zoe (and we’re the top fundraising team so far!).
Zoe is an adorable 5-year-old girl, the youngest of 8 kids. She was diagnosed with CF just before her first birthday, but you wouldn’t know it by meeting her. Zoe is a little shy, but she is very into princesses, Hello Kitty and most things pink. Zoe’s mom, Jada, is an avid blogger. She chronicles the family and Zoe’s journey with CF on the blog, Zoe for Life. (I’ve also added it to my blogroll if you want to check it out.

It was great to sit down with other members of Team Zoe and meet Zoe, her brother Austin and their mom Jada over lunch. Zoe spent most of the lunch coloring in her Hello Kitty color book, but she did wow us with some Princess trivia (Who is the only princess to have 3 different names?) and gave us all purple bracelets that read “Cure Cystic Fibrosis.” Here are a few pictures we took with Zoe after lunch.

Meeting Zoe and her family gave me another unforgettable connection to CF. Lately my giving back efforts haven’t gone much further than running in a charity race, donating blood or giving money to a friend’s fundraising efforts…but getting involved with CFF and Single Greatest Night has been one of the best things I’ve done since I came to Jacksonville. It’s amazingly powerful to interact with kids like Zoe and be able to share their stories with all of you. Most of us take for granted the breaths we take, yet there are 30,000 children and adults in America who are fighting a disease that can make each breath a struggle. Next time you take a deep breath, I hope you think of Zoe and her fight.

12 Things For You

12 things to learn, forget and remember again — courtesy of a fridge clipping that Tristan Prettyman saw and shared. I would have shared this with a few friends via email, but thought it would best to share with anyone who cares enough to find and read it.

1. You will receive a body.

You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours the entire period.

2. You will learn lessons.

You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called Life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid.

3. There are no mistakes, only lessons.

Growth is a process of trial and error: experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that ultimately “work.”

4. A lesson is repeated until learned.

A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can then go on to the next lesson.

5. Learning lessons does not end.

There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

6. “There” is no better than “here.”

When your “there” has become a “here,” you will simply obtain another “there” that will again look better than “here.”

7. Others are merely mirrors of you.

You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself.

8. What you make of your life is up to you.

You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

9. Life is exactly what you think it is.

You create a life that matches your beliefs and expectations.

10. Your answers lie inside you.

The answers to life’s questions lie inside you. All you need to do is look, listen, and trust.

11. You will forget all this.

12. You can remember it whenever you want.

Happy Friday! ♥

12 Things For You

9.3 Miles – Every Step of the Way

It’s the night before the Gate River Run 15k, and I should be turning off the computer and trying to fall asleep. I can feel adrenaline flowing through my body though, so I hope by writing it wil relax me enough to knock me out for 7 good hours of sleep.

I’ve had tomorrow’s race circled on my calendar since I first thought about taking up running, back in August. It’s the biggest race in Jacksonville every year (15,000 runners in the 15k) and I’ve come to realize if you’re a runner in Jax, people don’t ask if you’ve run the River Run – they ask how many you’ve finished.

My friend (and roommate) Stacey wrote this really cool note about why she’s running the Gate, and it inspired me to make one of my own.  So here’s 9 or so reasons I’ll be thinking of every step of the way.

Mile 1 – I’m taking this one for me. For setting a new challenge in front of me, something I had never thought about seriously doing (or enjoying), sticking to the training (mostly) and accomplishing a big part of my goal. I intend to continue finding challenges and working towards accomplishing throughout my lifetime. Running is really good practice.

Mile 2 – This one’s for Raechel, my best friend, confidant and my favorite runner! Last year, we were supposed to run the Shamrock Run 5k together and I bailed on her, having just flown back from a job interview in Jax, feeling under the weather and frightened of running in a real race with lots of people. Rae was the first one I’d text or call when I finished a step in training (2 miles today! 5K! 6 miles!) and she always encouraged me. I can’t thank her enough for her support and all-around incredibleness. I can’t wait until we run a race TOGETHER! (PS: She’s running a half marathon next month with Team in Training. You can read about it and cheer her on here.)

Mile 3 – For my Mom, who told me the other day that me running was “so cool because its so unlike you.” LOL, I can’t argue with that because she’s kinda right. To think that I’m going to do a 15K and a half marathon before my Mom does is a little unreal, since she’s a workout machine. Tomorrow I’ll definitely be thinking about that one time we worked out together, where she kicked my ass and I was too intimidated to go with her again for 2 years. Love you Momma!!

Mile 4 – Here’s to you Dad, who told me one of the last times I was home, that I couldn’t run that far. (Garrett is my witness) You were kidding a little, but I know you’ll be proud when I call and tell you I finished 9 miles.

Mile 5 – For Stacey, who has been a great friend, roommate and teammate since I met you last summer. Good luck in the race, even though I really want to beat you! 🙂

Mile 6 – Running this one for Laura, who I met right after she finished her first half marathon. Remember that conversation I had with you Labor Day weekend (you were getting ready for Anna’s wedding so probably not) and I told you, I’m going to run a half marathon? That got you really excited and you gave me all sorts of good advice about workouts, training and nutrition. We need to re-do that conversation now that I’m 5 weeks from a real half marathon.

Mile 7 – This one is for my brother Adam. Because after you start running 7 miles at a time, you can’t be called “fatty” anymore…even by your little brother (who could probably benefit from more soccer or running himself). Come down here and we’ll compare beach bods.

Mile 8 – A big thanks in this mile to all my Brass peeps and Corvallis friends. Laura E., Sarah, Bryan, Tom, Zack, Steve, Eric – who all were training for some marathon, half marathon, triatholon while I knew and worked with you. I used to think you were crazy. Actually, I still do but more in an admiring way. To Ethan, who told me running more than 2 miles ever was stupid (you’re right). And to Brady, who founded Corn Dog Day many years ago – I’m celebrating my running achievements with a few corndogs at next week’s party.

Mile 9 – I started running as a way of distraction when Garrett left for 2 months on his ship, so its no surprise that I chose this mile specifically for him. This is the mile with the really big bridge that you have to run up and over before you see the finish line. Your words “just keep swimming” will get me up that hill and down the other side. It’s kinda like the hill we’re climbing right now…no matter how steep or long it might seem now, soon we’ll only have the downhill part left. And when we get to that finish line, I’ll be there waiting for you (with Starbucks in hand).

Last .3 miles – This little part is for my virtual running buddy, Kait, who I’ll actually get to meet at the Country Music (Half) Marathon next month. Nashville, here we come!!!

You can follow along on www.jacksonville.com tomorrow for race results and information. I expect to finish right around 10AM, so check it out when you west coasters wake up tomorrow. I’ll also post something on Twitter, Facebook and eventually here to let you know I survived!

9.3 Miles – Every Step of the Way

A new kind of challenge

One of my keywords for 2009 is MOVE. I want to get out and have adventures. See things and explore. Get my butt in gear and be active. Do something challenging that I can be proud about. (Ironically, I didn’t necessarily mean pack up my things and move into a new place, but I am next weekend.)

I’ve never been a runner or even interested in running at any speed for most of my life. My high school and college were both well-regarded for stellar cross country and track teams, so I’m used to being around fast, active people. Last September, I decided I needed a new personal challenge and running became my outlet. I circled the Race for the Cure and the Outback Thanksgiving Day race as two races that I wanted to do, with the ultimate goal of doing a half-marathon. This challenge came at a good time for me, as I needed a distraction while my boyfriend was underway for a couple months with the Navy.

Using a “Couch to 5K” plan, I worked my way up to the Race for the Cure 5K in about 5 weeks. I broke my goal of 30 minutes, by finishing the race in 29:02. I kept training and also completed the Outback Distance Classic 6K with my friend Stacey, under our goal of 36 minutes (6K=3.6 miles). In just over two months, I went from non-runner to finshing two races. I was kinda hooked!

Outback 6K  Race for the Cure 2008

Outback 6K (with Stacey) and Race for the Cure5k – 2008

Running presents challenges to me that I’ve never faced before. It’s hard. At least for me, since I’ve never ran without a ball in front of me or much more than a mile at a time. It takes dedication. I couldn’t go out and just run miles without putting in the training time. It’s a mental challenge. Running can be boring…especially on a treadmill. I’m just now learning how to push through pain and thoughts of “am I done yet?” (hint: just keep swimming) Now I’m embracing running as a great distraction and stress reliver.

I’ve set new goals for myself for the first few months of 2009. I will run (and finish!) the Gate River Run 15K here in Jacksonville. This is the biggest race in Jax each year (and the U.S. National Championship for the 15K distance). It’s 9.3 miles through downtown, over 2 bridges and starts & finishes at the Jaguars’ Stadium. I’ll be one of 14,000+ people trying to tackle this distance on March 14th (one month!). If that’s not enough of a challenge, I’m also planning on running in Nashville on April 25th in the Country Music Half Marathon with my virtual running buddy, Kait. Dave Matthews and Jason Mraz play that evening @ Vanderbilt, so that will be part of our motivation to cross the finish line!

I’ll continue to blog about my workouts and my progress towards the River Run and half marathon.  Yesterday, I set a new personal best by doing 6 miles in 62:20 on the treadmill. By using an adaptation of Hal Higdon’s 15K training schedule, which uses walk breaks during the long runs, I have become a fan of this method. It allows for a little recovery through the workout, lessening chances for injury, and also keeps me mentally engaged throughout the run.

If you are a runner, spectator, or heckler and have some words of wisdom or encouragement, I’d love to hear them. I’m also looking for new music to add to my iPod for training. I made a great 6K playlist for the Outback run and look forward to doing the same for the River Run. Feel free to leave comments below and let me know what you think.

MOVE is one of my challenges-resolutions-goals for 2009. What are yours and how are you following through on them?

A new kind of challenge

25 Blurbs and Bits of Randomness

Going around on Facebook right now is the “25 things” note. Someone writes a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, goals, etc about themselves and tags 25 people to do the same. I’ve been tagged by at least 5 people and enjoyed reading all my friends’ notes so far. I wrote and posted this note on Facebook tonight, but thought it was also appropriate to post on my blog. I’m hoping it will set up a few of the things I want to write about in the near future and catch y’all up on my life these days. If you like it, leave a comment below. Without further ado…

 1. I started noticing my friends being tagged in these “25 things” notes and was wondering why no one was tagging me, since they know I’m on Facebook at work all day anyways. Maybe I’m not that interesting? Then Thursday hit and I’ve been tagged in five or more notes since. It was only then that I realized Holly tagged me first on January 4th and I should’ve done this a few weeks ago.

2. It will either take me two days to write these 25 things or twenty minutes. I am guilty of consistently over-estimating the effort I think it will take to write notes, blog posts and emails, so I tend to put them off until I feel so guilty about not blogging or responding or saying hello that the whole vicious cycle starts again. The exception to this is daily emails to Garrett when he’s underway on the ship. He will be the first to confirm that I can bang out a ridiculously long email without much effort.

3. In another broswer tab, I have NHL Gamecast showing the Dallas Stars (v. Columbus) game. [Stars are winning 6-3 btw] I have never made an effort to watch pro hockey, except maybe the Stanley Cup finals, until the 2008-09 season started and I had a reason to. Like most other things that I do or share with Garrett, following the Stars seems completely normal and comfortable, like I’ve been doing it forever.

4. My mantra keywords for 2009 are TIME, CONNECT and MOVE. The goals (resolutions) and things I want to focus on this year all tie into those three words. Chris Brogan, who is one of the smartest and most giving people I’ve never actually met, inspired me to do these keywords in a blog post on or before Jan 1, 2009. I plan to explain my personal keywords (and give Chris a trackback link, not like he needs it) in a long-overdue blog post, soon.

5. I never expected to achieve my dream job at age 23, but I definitely feel like I put in the work and effort to have achieved it. All of the steps I’ve taken in my life and the decisions I have made have led me to where I am now. I firmly believe that we all have a plan laid out for us by God and when one door closes, another will open. Sometimes it might just be a window, but I’ve always had faith enough to move through what’s next, even when I don’t fully understand why.

6. I am grateful that I can now look back at many different key moments in my life and see the lines that have been drawn from point to point. It helps me understand that I shouldn’t regret anything, just be thankful for an experience and learn from it, even the ones that end unpleasantly.

7. I have been in love three times. I’m so thankful that Dana explained to me in Ireland that you will never love anyone in the same way and that is okay. She was absolutely right.

8. I really love writing and don’t give myself enough time to do it. The same goes with reading. [And I think I’m pretty good at both.] Ironically, I get sick of the internet and that is where I waste all my time.

9. Some of the people I will tag in this note that I consider dear friends and amazing people, even if I haven’t spoken to them in months or years. I feel terrible about letting friendships go that long without real authentic connection. Facebook is a poor excuse for staying “caught up” with someone you really care about. Those who fall into this description probably can figure out who you are and I hope you are doing great in life, wherever it has taken you. Re-read #4 and know you are inspiration for “CONNECT”.

10. When I get married, I’ll skimp on spending for the the dress and splurge on the shoes. I have no plans to wear more than one wedding dress in my lifetime, but I’ll definitely wear a pair of Jimmy Choos or Manolo Blahniks whenever I have an excuse!

11. My favorite number is 11. I’ve always liked it, probably something about the double 1’s that I think looks cool. It was my uniform number anytime I could choose. The only reason there is a 5 on my golf ball tattoo is because 11 wouldn’t fit, and 5 is symbolic to me too.

12. One of my first sports memories was watching the Trail Blazers in the 1990 Finals against the Pistons. After the final game of the series, I knew we had lost but I asked my parents why the teams didn’t line up and high five each other like I did in my own soccer games. I think I was onto something there…

13. If I wasn’t working in sports, I’d want to be in the music industry. Those two environments have the potential to be the most fun work settings ever. You get to meet cool people, attend great events, and see amazing things like John Mayer play the guitar, Dave Matthews do his chicken dance, Sergio Garcia make a double-breaking up-the-hill momentum-charging putt, and Martell Webster color with 3-year olds.

14. I have wanted to get a second tattoo since before I left for Ireland in 2005. I still want it – a simple celtic cross, with a rose in the center symbolizing St. Therese the Little Flower (my patron saint). I still need someone to draw it out for me. When I have that, I’ll have to face the fear of getting it put on my ribs and the disapproval from a certain someone (or someones, but I think my parents would be ok with it). Maybe someday I’ll get it, but probably not before I get back to Ireland.

15. French fries, or Irish “chips” dipped in mayonnaise are one of the most delicious things ever. Especially when you wash it down with a true pint of Guinness. Anything my mom cooks also goes on the list of most delicious things. Especially our Christmas Eve ’08 meal that we killed on [prime rib, homemade ravioli, roasted vegetables, great wine] even though the only electricity we had that week was routed to our Traeger BBQ.

16. Oregonians are foodies. That’s the easy way to say our tastebuds (for most of us) appreciate interesting, complex and flat out good flavors. This isn’t just limited to food…also extends to wine, beer and anything else that can be grown, raised, crafted, brewed or created locally. I’m so lucky to have grown up in a family full of foodies.

17. There are a few more than 25 people tagged on this note. I apologize if anyone’s keeping track. While I do want to read 25 things about all of you, I mostly just want to say hello 🙂

18. I have this habit of picking up my life and moving myself into a place where I know no one. Luckily, I also have a habit of succeeding when I do that. This started in high school, when I chose to go to La Salle (a private school) rather than my local school, Molalla High. Even though I moved back to MHS during my sophomore year, I’m glad I left. At Northern Arizona University, I remember sitting in my dorm room the first week thinking “I know absolutely no one here.” Ireland and Jacksonville were the same. I’m not sure why I do this and hope it is not something negative in my unconscious. (Dana, you may have to help me with this one!)

19. Both Molalla High School and NAU had awesome cross country and track teams, yet I never had any interest in running. I actually despised running for most of my life. In September, I decided to give it a try as a totally new way to challenge myself (and it seemed like a good distraction). I have since completed two races (Race for the Cure 5K + Outback 6K) and am working towards the Gate River Run 15K in March and Country Music Half Marathon in Nashville in April.

20. Part of my drive to push myself stems from wanting to be an example for my siblings, cousins and people who come after me. Then, over Christmas, I realized that my younger cousins don’t really know who I am or even what my name is. This made me sad until I learned that telling them I work for Tiger Woods and other golfers at the PGA TOUR now makes me the coolest relative they don’t know.

21. I really am logged onto Facebook 95% of the time I’m at work, but the difference between me and many of you is that I’m usually doing work on Facebook. You think the PGA TOUR pages and photo galleries build themselves? 🙂

22. Tall girls in tall shoes sometimes really annoys me ( even if it’s you Laura, Ashley and Raechel). My height is probably the only physical thing I’d change about myself. My ideal height would be 5’5″ or 5’6″…I don’t want to be tall, just not short.

23. I was named after my aunt Therese, who I never met. I think she is my guardian angel who protects me from all the stupid things I do. She died, along with my Dad’s parents, in 1977. Had I been a boy, I would’ve been named Neil after my grandpa, which makes me wonder what my cousin Neil (next in line after me) would’ve been named?

24. Brandon Roy might really be one of my heroes. But he’s nothing compared to my favorite Roy, my dad, who is the best father, protector, example and hero a girl could have.

25. Things I miss: Dance parties, turtles, high school golf, NAU Live!, Kilmurry Village, watching the sunrises and sunsets at the house I grew up in, not having a car payment or student loans, Cloud 9 and Crowbar, winter beach trips with the girls, living with my sibs, the smell of Flagstaff, the feeling of being home. And probably you, a little bit!

25 Blurbs and Bits of Randomness

New – New – New

It has been so long since I’ve visited my own blog [much less wrote here] that I forgot what it looked like. So when I came back, I decided to change the look. This is a cool (and free) theme I think fits me a little bit better – good color, better fonts, more personality. What do you think?

Changing my blog’s look isn’t the only new thing in my life right now. I’ve been shaking things up for the last couple months, and I have to say, it’s been quite fun. It’s been five months since I packed up life as I knew it and moved across the country to follow my dreams. I’m getting more used to the perma-vacation life that Florida offers (not that I always take advantage) and am starting to build myself a life here. A summary of what’s new in my life since the summer would have to include:

  • A new political party – I’m a full blown Obama supporter
  • Joining beach volleyball, soccer and kickball teams (fun, except for the back-to-back days!)
  • Getting older (24!) and being able to celebrate back home in Oregon
  • Meeting a fantastic guy who I adore, and happily call my boyfriend
  • Setting a goal of running a 5K this fall, which has since evolved into a half marathon
  • Exploring Florida with adventures to Okefenokee Swamp, Orlando, St. Augustine and Amelia Island (pictures here)

I’ll write about all of these things in more detail soon, and will continue to try to be better about posting things on the blog. I need to stop thinking of it as a “life update” page and instead nurture it to become a place for my thoughts, words, links, photos, videos, blurbs and memories. I can’t promise everything that is posted here will be appropriate or relevant for everyone who reads it, but it will be a reflection of me. Right now, that’s what I need it to be, what I want this place to be.

If you haven’t already, sign up to get my new blog posts sent directly to your email (on the top of the right column) or subscribe via RSS. To leave a comment (or leave love, as I like to say), click on the comments link at the end of the post. It will take you to a form so you can post a comment and say hello.

One more thing…even though I was cheering for Sergio, Paddy and the Europeans in the Ryder Cup all weekend, I am very happy to see the Cup come back to the USA. This weekend’s matches were so much fun to watch — incredible golf from both teams. I think we’ve cemented a few more personalities on the PGA TOUR, which is always a good thing. USA FTW!

New – New – New

Taking off the sunglasses for a second…

I have a symptom of procrastination that goes a bit like this: I know there is a task I have to do without a drop-dead date of when it needs to be done. Life gets in the way and before I know it, I still haven’t set on doing that task. Recognizing this, I vow to complete said task and then life gets in the way, again. By this time I’m a little embarrassed I haven’t done the task and now think that by doing it, it will show that I’ve forgotten about it or pushed it off (even if the intention was so good to begin with). I’ll either continue to think about it but not finish what I set out to do or finally suck up my pride and do it.

This blog post is me finally sucking up and doing it (blogging).

My idea is that once I write a new post, I won’t hesitate again to write when the mood strikes. I’ve wanted to write about a few random things lately (best YouTube pilates videos, Sex & The City movie, golf lessons) but thought it’d be strange to just jump in with a post that didn’t say “Hi, I’m alive and everything is great in Florida.” (This is also that post)

June is the halfway month of the year, so I’m going to try to make some mid-year resolutions. Among other things, these include taking and posting more pictures of life down here [as soon as I find the USB cable for my camera], blogging more regularly to keep in touch with everyone, and looking better in my swimsuit [it’s always swim season in Florida!]. Breaking 80 in the next six months would be good too.

Until next time, which shouldn’t be as long as last time, Ciao!
